Summary from Goodreads: Fate and fortune. Power and passion. What does it take to be the queen of a kingdom when you’re only seventeen?
Maya is cursed. With a horoscope that promises a marriage of death and destruction, she has earned only the scorn and fear of her father’s kingdom. Content to follow more scholarly pursuits, her whole world is torn apart when her father, the Raja, arranges a wedding of political convenience to quell outside rebellions. Soon Maya becomes the queen of Akaran and wife of Amar. Neither roles are what she expected: As Akaran’s queen, she finds her voice and power. As Amar’s wife, she finds something else entirely: Compassion. Protection. Desire…
But Akaran has its own secrets—thousands of locked doors, gardens of glass, and a tree that bears memories instead of fruit. Soon, Maya suspects her life is in danger. Yet who, besides her husband, can she trust? With the fate of the human and Otherworldly realms hanging in the balance, Maya must unravel an ancient mystery that spans reincarnated lives to save those she loves the most…including herself.
“I know your soul. Everything else is just an ornament.”
SO THIS BOOK IS SO FREAKING GOOD! THIS IS ONE OF MY FAVORITE BOOKS OF ALL TIME, LIKE THAT KINDA GOOD.
So the 1st to talk about is the freaking writing, Like OH MY OH MY like teach me how to write Roshani Chokshi. I bet her grocery lists are pieces of art.
So this entire was so magical, and amazing, Roshani Chokshi has became one of my favorite authors ever. This book made me want to weep in joy, it was so beautiful.
So I think this was a Hades/Persephone retelling but I ‘m not complete sure but thats what it gave me major vibes of it.
This one of my favorite fantasy reads of the year, and of all time.
So the story starts with Maya and she has a dark horoscope, the darkest of all the horoscopes.
But then the Raja of Bharata who is her father decided to marry her off so that he can gain a political alliance for a war. She “decided” to give up her freedom and everything she has for her father, but shes “kidnapped” and off to marry the king of the Otherworld.
So that’s everything I can say before I think I give too much away. All I have to say this book is amazing. And I loved the characters, And the male love interest is absolutely amazing, and really fun.
So lets take a moment to look at her beautiful writing
“A memory is a fine legacy to
“I love you,” he murmured into my hair. “You are my night and stars, the fate I would fix myself to in any life.”
“I want to lie beside you and know the weight of your dreams,” he said, brushing his lips against my knuckles. “I want to share whole worlds with you and write your name in the stars.” He moved closer and a chorus of songbirds twittered silver melodies.
“I am a nightmare to most, and a dream for the broken; who am I?’ and the answer to that is death.” “Correct.”
“Show me a dream unrealized. Don’t show me unchangeable paths.”
